Broadwayworld.com recently attended a private tasting and Bordeaux101 seminar with renowned Sommelier, Michael Madrigale who oversees the wine programs for Bar Boulud, Boulud Sud and Épicerie Boulud of Chef Daniel Boulud's "Dinex Group. The event was held at Boulud Sud, located in Lincoln Plaza, 20th West 64th Street in New York City.

Madrigale invited guests into the restaurant's stylish wine cellars to lead the guided tasting of his hand-selected white and red Bordeaux and Bordeaux Supérieur wines. He covered all the basics of enjoying Bordeaux from introducing the varieties, to suggested food pairings. Madrigale presented eight outstanding selections for the tasting.

Bordeaux wines come from the Bordeaux region of France, the largest wine producing area in the country. The success of winemaking in the area is the excellent environment for growing vines. With over 8,000 French Chateaus that produce wine, there are an endless variety of fine red, white and rose choices to suit every budget.

Guests of the tasting enjoyed the wines paired with small bites. The Chateau La Freynelle 2013, Bordeaux Blanc has 60% Sauvignon Blanc and 40% Sermillon. It retails for $13.00 a bottle and has a lovely bouquet of white peaches with a hint of lemon peel. The Chateau Turcaud 2013, Bordeaux Rouge we sampled has 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon. Retailing for $12.00, it has a spicy tone and a pleasant fruity aftertaste. The Chateau de Camarsac 2012, Bordeaux Rouge retails for $20.00 a bottle. It has 90% Merlot, 5% Cabrnet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc. The wine's aging in tank is done with the use of wood staves to soften the tannins and gain volume. This Bordeaux has a round, supple fruit and a neat finish. These three wines, along with the five others presented at the tasting had distinctive and pleasing qualities.

You don't have to be a connoisseur to appreciate the versatility and the quality of Bordeaux wines. Yet, everyone who attended the Bourdeaux101 seminar learned a great deal as they enjoyed Michael Madrigale's presentation and his incredible knowledge of fine wine.
