MEGU Sweetens Dinner with Local Dessert Partnerships Image

The Meatpacking District's premiere Japanese dining destination, Megu, is introducing a dessert series that is sure to satisfy even the most well curated sweet tooth. Each month, Megu will partner with a different local and trendy dessert company to collaborate on a unique dessert for their menu. Each dessert is seasonal and will highlight the unique marriage of said company and Megu's Japanese cuisine.

For April and May, Megu will be partnering with The Doughnut Project for a play on 'fire and ice'. The dessert will feature a custom doughnut made by The Doughnut Project team; a doughnut with charcoal incorporated into the dough. The reason for this is to create a great contrast between the black doughnut, red glaze, and white meringue but it will not alter the doughnut's flavor. The 'fire' portion of the dessert comes to us by way of yuzu kosho, a blend of citrus zest, garlic, chile and salt, which add acidity and some heat to traditional Japanese dishes, and pepper to give the glaze some spice. The doughnut is then topped with a charred smoked sugar meringue. The 'ice' portion of this scrumptious dish comes is from the Megu team, a coconut sorbet.

The idea of the dessert partnership comes on the heels of a transitional phase at Megu; with a new Culinary Director and Chef de Cuisine on board, the Megu team felt it was time to take it up a notch and further show off their culinary creativity. With a menu full of delicious and photo-worthy items (Tuna Tartare Cones, Salmon Belly Tacos, etc.) the natural next step was desserts. Collaborating with local, contemporary, dessert brands in NYC allows both Megu and the brand partner to reach markets that may not have been accessible before. The dessert will remain on Megu's menu for the month, and will also be available for limited release at the company's store.

About The Doughnut Project

The Doughnut Project is a small-batch, hand-crafted doughnut shop with two locations in Manhattan. The shop combines some of the best doughnuts in America with an upbeat, artistic vibe. The shop's co-founders Troy Neal and Leslie Polizzotto create unique flavors inspired by the amazing food and creative cocktails of New York City. The yeast-raised doughnuts have glazes, fillings, and toppings that include out-of-the-box ingredients such as bacon, beets, olive oil, ricotta cheese, sesame seeds, black pepper and sea salt. The shop creates new and intriguing flavor profiles on a regular basis and sells out daily. For more information, visit https://www.thedoughnutproject.com/.
