To help ease the suffering of the Italian earthquake victims, the West Village's da Tommy Osteria will donate $10 to the Italian Red Cross for every order of Pasta alla Matriciana purchased at $17. This is a very generous donation from the sales of the menu item.
Owner Tomaso "Tommy" Roncari, from Milan, added the dish, one of the most classic and beloved of authentic Italian cuisine, because its Amatriciana sauce - guanciale (the original Roman bacon of cured pork cheek), tomato and Pecorino Romana - originated in Amatrice, which is one of the hardest hit towns by 6.2 magnitude quake that struck on Aug. 23 causing nearly 300 deaths (and climbing) and leaving more than 1000 homeless.
With its $10 donation (60 percent of the Pasta alla Matriciana ) da Tommy, located joins a number of other Italian restaurants throughout New York City serving the dish so associated with Amatrice and donating a portion of each sale to the Italian Red Cross, with amounts ranging from $2 to $5. Roncari reports he will continue the donation program through September at his rustic Italian snuggery.
