In an effort to expand its available selection of domestic and international craft beers, The Microbrewed Beer of the Month Club, a membership-based beer club which distributes rare U.S. and international craft beers on a monthly basis, announces that canned craft beers will now be included with select monthly shipments throughout 2015.

"We've been really excited about expanding our featured beers to offer breweries that package in cans. It opens up so many outstanding craft breweries that only can their beers, breweries we wouldn't be able to offer otherwise," says Kris Calef, president and founder of The Microbrewed Beer of the Month Club. "There's been a little apprehension with our customer base, as old stereotypes tend to linger. We've been trained for so long that only average, cheaper products come in cans, but that simply is no longer the case. Some of the best craft brewed beers in the country are being packaged exclusively in cans. We've got a little educating to do, but in the end, the proof's in the pudding, and I know our skeptical members will come to realize those old stereotypes no longer apply."

The March, 2015 shipment from The Microbrewed Beer of the Month Club featured six canned craft beers from Crazy Mountain Brewing Company, Big Bend Brewing Company, and Mikkeller, three craft breweries well-known for quality microbrewed beers. The beers featured were:

  • Crazy Mountain Brewing Company: Mountain Livin' Pale Ale & Crazy Mountain Amber Ale
  • Big Bend Brewing Company: Number 22 Porter & Terlingua Gold
  • Mikkeller: Wit Fit & Better Half

Both Crazy Mountain Brewing Company and Big Bend Brewing Company have been canning beer since they opened, while Mikkeller has only recently begun exploring canning for some of its more popular beers.

The Microbrewed Beer of the Month Club will not be offering any canned craft beers until the September, 2015, shipment. Several major domestic and international craft breweries are being considered for this shipment, including:

  • Yo-Ho Brewing Company
  • Evil Twin Brewing
  • Nebraska Brewing Company
  • Cigar City Brewing
  • Wynkoop Brewing Company
  • Snake River Brewing

The recent surge in craft beer canning can be attributed to many different beneficial factors, including the lower packaging costs when compared to bottling and the increasing availability of mobile canning operations. In addition, cans offer excellent protection against the harmful effects of sunlight, can help keep beer fresh for longer periods of time, are lighter and safer than bottles, and are more environmentally friendly.
