Being involved in theater as a child provides young ones with such valuable life experiences and can help them develop skills they can use for the rest of their life!
I have been involved in theater for many years now, both onstage and off. Through theater, I have created long-lasting friendships and gained many positive experiences that have shaped who I am today. Looking back on my childhood, I am eternally grateful that my parents enrolled me in dance classes, acting intensives, and vocal lessons when I was younger because I found something I was truly passionate about. Being involved in theater as a child provides young ones with such valuable life experiences and can help them develop skills they can use for the rest of their life!
A benefit of getting your child exposed to theater is the memories your child will have. Being a part of a musical is a long process with so many little, intricate parts to prepare for opening night. While this can be tiring, some of my favorite memories from my childhood are the ones I made at rehearsal, tech week, or a show!
As a kid, I was put in every sport possible. Soccer? Yes. Basketball? Yep. Swimming? Absolutely. Nothing really sparked my interest until my mother enrolled me in my first ballet class and I was in awe. I absolutely loved dancing and performing. By getting your children involved in theater, they may find something they are really passionate about!
Another major benefit of being a part of theater is the skills you gain from it. As I mentioned earlier, the whole show process can be exhausting, teaching your children stamina and patience. It takes a lot of stamina to sing and dance at the same time, and a lot of patience to wait for the director or choreographer to work with your group/number. Another skill you gain through participating in theater is time management. Being in a production requires you to fully commit. The rehearsal schedule is long and rigorous, in addition to schoolwork and whatever other activities you are a part of. So, you have to be able to manage your time well and prioritize.
A big question that a lot of people ask is “but what if my kid isn’t talented?”. I believe that when you are a child, it shouldn’t matter how talented you are to participate in a class, workshop, school or community show. I think it is all about that exposure to a new environment and the performing arts. Another great part about theater is that you don’t have to be on stage! There are so many wonderful, necessary backstage positions including costumes, sound, lights, set, house, and many more!
Overall, theater is something I believe that every child should be exposed to growing up. Whether that’s being a part of a show, a workshop, or even just seeing a show, theater is such an excellent experience for young people, and I would highly recommend encouraging your children to get involved!
