Today in 1989, Grand Hotel opened at the Martin Beck Theatre (now the Al Hirschfeld Theatre) where it ran for 1017 performances. Grand Hotel is a musical with a book by Luther Davis and music and lyrics by Robert Wright and George Forrest, with additional lyrics and music by Maury Yeston. Based on the 1929 Vicki Baum novel and play, Menschen im Hotel (People in a Hotel), and the subsequent 1932 MGM feature film, the musical focuses on events taking place over the course of a weekend in an elegant hotel in 1928 Berlin and the intersecting stories of the eccentric guests of the hotel, including a fading prima ballerina; a fatally ill Jewish bookkeeper, who wants to spend his final days living in luxury; a young, handsome, but destitute Baron; a cynical doctor; and a typist dreaming of Hollywood success.

The Roundabout Theatre Company just welcomed Emma Stone in her Broadway debut as 'Sally Bowles' last night on Broadway. She joins Joe Masteroff, John Kander and Fred Ebb's Tony-winning musical Cabaret starring Alan Cumming in his Tony Award-winning role as 'Emcee.' The Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Orange County just presented a special Into the Woods Reunion- one final opportunity to journey back into the woods and American musical theater history with the creators and members of the original Broadway cast of Into the Woods, on Sunday, November 9. Laura Osnes, Christian Borle, Hugh Panaro, Taylor Richardson, John Bolton, Tituss Burgess, Rachel Bay Jones and Julia Murney all took part in Best in Shows, a star-studded cabaret evening to benefit the Humane Society of New York, last night at New World Stages. Hosted and with Music Direction by Seth Rudetsky, Best in Shows was presented by Dorothy and Bill Berloni. THE LAST SHIP - the new musical with music and lyrics by 16-time Grammy Award-winner Sting and book by Tony Award-winner John Logan and Pulitzer Prize-winner Brian Yorkey opened on Broadway on October 26. In the video below, T he Broadway cast, crew, and orchestra joined together for the Official Lip Sync Video of 'Roxanne' by The Police. Sting even joined in the fun, with the help of special guest Al Roker!

Happy Birthday Jackie Hoffman! Hoffman was seen on Broadway as Grandma in The Addams Family. Her other Broadway credits include Xanadu and Hairspray (for which she received the Theatre World Award). Off-Broadway she has been seen in Regrets Only, Pride & Joy, Book of Liz (Obie Award), Straightjacket, Incident at Cobbler's Knob, and One Woman Shoe. Regional credits include Second City (Jeff Award), Sisters Rosensweig.

The Broadway run of An American in Paris will begin previews Friday, March 13, 2015 for a Sunday, April 12, 2015 opening night at the Palace Theatre (Broadway at 47th Street). AN AMERICAN IN PARIS is directed and choreographed by Christopher Wheeldon. Inspired by the Academy-Award winning film, An American in Paris brings this classic tale to Broadway for the first time with music and lyrics by George Gershwin and Ira Gershwin and a book by Tony and Pulitzer Prize nominee Craig Lucas. Prior to Broadway, An American in Paris will premiere at the Theatre du Chatelet in Paris where previews begin November 22, 2014 for a December 10, 2014 opening night. Abigail Shapiro plays the title role in Liberty: A Monumental New Musical. Directed by Evan Pappas, the new musical will play a limited seven-week engagement at Theatre 80 (80 St. Marks Place) through Tuesday, November 25, 2014. Happy Birthday Ann Reinking! Reinking came to critical notice in 'Over Here!' (Theatre World Award), and later went on to originate roles in 'Goodtime Charley' (with Tony and Drama Desk nominations) and 'Bob Fosse's Dancin' (Tony nomination). She also took over leads in 'Chicago', 'A Chorus Line', and 'Sweet Charity'. She appeared in Fosse's semi-autobiographical film All That Jazz, as well as the films Annie and Micki and Maude.

Broadway recently welcomed a bunch of 'Newtildas' to Broadway company of Matilda the Musical. One of the four leading ladies is Eliza Holland Madore, an 8 years old, who was previously seen as Ivanka in Once. Below, watch as Eliza finds out that she got the part!

As BroadwayWorld reported last month, Stephen Sondheim recently announced at the New Yorker Festival that he is working on something new. Confirming previously reported rumors, the new project will be a collaboration between Sondheim and contemporary American playwright David Ives. The project, whose title was not announced, will be based on two classic films by Spanish filmmaker Luis Buñuel. The two separate films will be the basis for one complete story which the characters will exist in seamlessly. The first half will be based on The 1972 film 'The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie' and the second half will be based on the 1962 film 'The Exterminating Angel.'
