Hansberry was also a respected social activist during her short life. 'To Be Young, Gifted and Black,' composed after her untimely death at just age 34, recreates both her life experiences and the times that shaped her, through brilliantly highlighted scenes from her plays, letters, diaries, poems and personal reminiscences. Fast-paced, powerful, touching and funny, this kaleidescope showcases actors slipping ingeniously into and out of a variety of challenging roles spanning her life and experiences, to the ultimate confrontation when cancer strikes her. It is a major statement of the Black experience in mid-20th century America.
