The Stratford Shakespeare Festival held its Annual General Meeting Saturday, celebrating its 2011 season - a season which not only won resounding praise on both sides of the Atlantic, but also ended with a surplus of $52,995.
As part of its mission "to reestablish and expand Detroit's theatre district," Magenta Giraffe Theatre Company has chosen plays by Michigan natives and current Michigan residents to stage as part of a festival to take place March 31 and April 1, 2012, at the Abreact Performance Space (1301 W. Lafayette, #1301, Detroit, MI 48226). Attendees will see a reading of each play and are encouraged to participate in a workshop-style discussion afterward. Admission is by donation only.

'On The Road' is based on the novel of the same title by Jack Kerouac and is directed by Walter Salles. It is about two friends, Dean played by Garrett Hedlundy and Sal played by Sam Riley that are a part of the Beat Generation. Kristen Stewart co-stars as he teenage bride Marylou. They travel across the country in the 1940s. The film also stars Kirsten Dunst, Viggo Mortensen, and Amy Adams.
The Ira Brind School of Theater Arts at the University of the Arts is to collaborate with its' own student run theater organization, Blurring Edges: A Cabaret Series to produce How Glory Goes, an evening of music pulling from the cannon of musical theater composer Adam Guettel. Faculty member Bill Buddendorf is set to direct alongside guest music director Darius Smith, who hails from Washington D.C. Smith is Assistant Professor and Musical Theatre Performance coordinator at Howard University.

The Dallas Opera Guild's 24th Annual Vocal Competition for young opera singers ended on a high-note last evening when ten outstanding finalists (with Texas connections) were awarded a total of $20,000 in prize monies. It is only the second time this spring musical event has graced the stage of the Margot and Bill Winspear Opera House at the AT&T Performing Arts Center in the Arts District.

On March 1st the Broadway community came together to celebrate the launch of the new iPad app called Stage Write. The app is made for theatre professionals and allows you to draw stage elements, place icons of actors in their spaces, and utilize scenic design. It has numerous features that can be used to keep a detailed record of the staging of a production.

The Tabard Theatre Company concludes its 11th season with music and dance and a what-if sense of history as it presents THE TIN PAN ALLEY RAG, a play by Mark Saltzman with music and lyrics by Scott Joplin and Irving Berlin.
