New Technology Allows Non-English Speakers to Enjoy West End ShowsDecember 21, 2009A new technology currently on trial in the West End will allow theatre attendees who do not speak the language used in the production to enjoy and understand the performance. The technology, called AirScript, wirelessly streams the script of the play, in real time, to a device that displays it in whatever language the user chooses, including French, Japanese, Spanish, Italian, Russian, Mandarin, German, and English.

Smoking Ban for Actors on Stage Upheld by Colorado Supreme CourtDecember 18, 2009The Colorado Supreme Court upheld an earlier ruling banning smoking in onstage productions. Colorado has a statewide ban on cigarettes and actors hoped they would be exempt from the rule. Over the past 3 years, several theatre groups have argued the ban infringed on their free speech rights. The statute was upheld be an overwhelming majority, with only one judge voting against lifting the ban. Six judges voted to uphold the ban.
Houston Ballet Presents AMERICAN AT HEART, 3/11 - 3/21 December 18, 2009Houston Ballet presents American at Heart, featuring two ballets that are significant to the history American dance (George Balanchine's Apollo and Jerome Robbins's Fancy Free) and one work inspired by American popular culture and created specifically for an American company (Christopher Bruce's Hush, choreographed for Houston Ballet in 2006). The production will run March 11th through March 21st, 2010.

Hobby Center Reorganizes Pit to Accomodate SOUND OF MUSICDecember 18, 2009The production of THE SOUND OF MUSIC currently playing at the Hobby Center in Houston has made use of their pit in a way that may surprise audiences. Instead of placing the orchestra in the pit, the Hobby Center has instead chosen to pipe in the music, using the pit area to aid in scene changes and allow some of the more intimate scenes to be played more downstage than a pit would have known.
