BroadwayWorld has just learned that Liza Minnelli's upcoming appearances at the London Palladium and Sheffield City Hall have been cancelled. According to a statement from the star's rep, it's 'because of the promotor's failure to pay. Due to current economics and unusually high ticket prices, the producer was unable to secure the promised funds.   For months Liza has been preparing for these shows and she was devastated to hear of this unfortunate news.  She has always thought of London a second home and will miss seeing her friends and devoted fans.' Tony Award-winner Joe DiPietro's critically acclaimed new comedy Clever Little Lies begins previews on Friday, September 18th for a strictly limited 16-week engagement. Opening night, originally announced for Wednesday, October 14th, is now set for Monday, October 12th at the Westside Theatre (Upstairs) (407 West 43rd Street). As previously announced, Clever Little Lies stars Emmy, Grammy, and Golden Globe Award-winner Marlo Thomas, Greg Mullavey, George Merrick and Kate Wetherhead, with direction by David Saint. Today in 1943, Porgy and Bess opened at the 44th Street Theatre, where it ran for 24 performances. First performed in 1935, with music by George Gershwin, libretto by DuBose Heyward, and lyrics by Ira Gershwin and DuBose Heyward, it was based on DuBose Heyward's novel Porgy and subsequent play of the same title, which he co-wrote with his wife Dorothy Heyward. All three works deal with African-American life in the fictitious Catfish Row in Charleston, South Carolina, in the early 1920s. Originally conceived by George Gershwin as an 'American folk opera', Porgy and Bess premiered in New York in the fall of 1935 and featured an entire cast of classically trained African-American singers-a daring artistic choice at the time. Did you know that Sir Patrick Stewart, star of stages and screens large and small had returned to television this season? No, I didn't think so. In BLUNT TALK on the Starz network, the Shakespearean legend turned Starship captain turned mutant teacher plays debilitatingly self-destructive newsman Walter Blunt. The black comedy, produced by Seth McFarland, is what would happen if you threw HBO's THE NEWSROOM, Showtime's EPISODES, and FOX's FAMILY GUY in a blender and turned it into a half-hour TV show. It's not WAITING FOR GODOT level quality, but seeing the normally earnest actor play such a delightfully silly character is incredibly entertaining, and for some reason cathartic. (more...)
