EugÉnie Grandet, an adaptation of Balzac's classic story of love, greed and betrayal, will play the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2013, at Assembly One George Square from today, 2 - 26 August. This will be the first ever stage production in English of this French classic.
Eugénie's dull, unaffected life is changed forever by the arrival of the bold and beautiful Charles. But her miser father has other plans for his prize possession. Will love conquer all?
Honoré de Balzac's greatest romantic novel will be vividly brought to life in a new stage adaptation written and produced by Jonathan Choat; a cast of ten will be directed by Donnacadh O'Briain who leads an acclaimed creative team including Scottish designer Lorna Richie, lighting designer Ben Ormerod, movement director Juri Nael and with an original live score composed by Edward Lewis.
Donnacadh said, "My aim is to bring a fresh contemporary feel to this epic, sweeping classical romance. With Lorna Richie's lush period costumes and dynamic and exciting movement by Juri Nael, we're thrilled to bring this brand new production to Edinburgh audiences."
Eugenie Grandet will be produced by Louis Hartshorn and Brian Hook, who have had over 30 productions at the Edinburgh Fringe since 2006, including 5* productions such as Keep the Change ("Awe inspiring... A skilfully presented and thrilling piece of theatre" - The Scotsman, The Crying Cherry ("An original, unique and devastatingly funny triumph" - The Scotsman), and the West End and Edinburgh Festival productions of The Blues Brothers, Live ("unmissable" Broadway Baby).
Donnacadh O'Briain is the Artistic Director of Natural Shocks, and the creator and director of pop-up venue PEEP, which made a huge splash at the Fringe in 2012 and which will bring a mixture of eclectic performance art and theatre to the Assembly Gardens this year. Amongst his many directorial credits, Donnacadh worked with Michael Boyd on the Royal Shakespeare Company's multi award-winning Histories Cycle, and as Assistant Director at the Gate Theatre Dublin, and as Dramaturge on Complicite's Endgame. He thus brings a classical sensibility and an eye for the current to this project.
This production of Eugénie Grandet at the Edinburgh Festival is exclusively sponsored by Nexus Communications Group.
