Review: EDINBURGH 2024: I WISH MY LIFE WERE LIKE A MUSICAL, Gilded Balloon at The Museum

I Wish My Life Were Like a Musical by Alexander S. Bermange, directed and choreographed by Matthew Parker, features four sublimely talented performers; Luke Harley, Sev Keoshgerian, Jessi O’Donnell and Julie Yammanee.

The cast arrive in gold sequined waistcoats ready to entertain with their opening number, comedically raising the impact of late comers, sweet eaters and the planning behind the choreography and harmonies, to make a positive impact and win audience hearts immediately.

The intention of the show is essentially concerned with educating audiences about the highs and lows of the musical theatre industry.

The show numbers tackle the areas of auditions, involving the hundreds of hopefuls queuing to be seen, the trials and tribulations of being subjected to countless casting panels and problematic musical key changes, to make the best of presenting vocals.

Comical songs on auditions, musical potentially creepy superfans, choreography by masochists and the heartbreak of being an unwanted understudy are explored.

Songs further address distracted and distracting audience members, rigid routes for wellness and anxiety, show 'love interests', dreaded theatre reviewers and insufferable diva starlets. I Wish My Life Were Like a Musical shines a jovial spotlight on the inner world of musicals, considering the resilience and endurance required beyond raw talent, to make it in the industry.

I Wish My Life Were Like a Musical is an enjoyable hour of vocal theatrics, fun and joy with the multi-talented performers giving it their all.
