Hackney Empire Theatre’s Marie Lloyd Bar is pleased to announce a solo show of artworks by London based artist Maria Emilov on view from 18th March – 31st March 2009. An opening reception will be held on Wednesday, 18th March from 6pm – 9pm. The public is invited and all are welcome.

Maria Emilov’s art is a deep evocation of the hidden feelings of the ‘hunted’ and ‘the estranged’. She takes us back into that lost ‘other country’ where we meet the real self, locked in behind the familiar norms of social and cultural identity.

Her collages of familiar cityscapes reveal a surprising ‘under-image’ that exists behind the linked and painted photographic surfaces. The result is artwork that can be read on several levels, a re-imaging of everyday life that peels back appearances to reveal a series of meaningful signs and symbols.

Maria’s work draws on both the constructive and destructive powers contained within the magic of human creativity. She is particularly interested in the notion of time and ‘anamnesis’ – the bridge back to memory, social meanings and philosophic truth.

The show is inspired by some of the themes in David Oluwale’s The Hounding on stage at the Hackney Empire Theatre 24 March – 28 March 2009.

The 18th March Opening 6-9pm will feature entertaining readings from two writers who work with Maria: Sue Hampton and Leslie Tate, authors of five published novels.
