BWW catches up with Jeppe Kaas Vad to chat about bringing Tourist to the 2023 Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

Why was this something you wanted to bring to an audience?

TOURIST is a show that highlights how different we are and how the goals we have are impacted massively by the people we meet and places we happen to go in life. It is class struggles on holiday! The show zooms in on our human nature of resisting changes - and the struggle we will go into for not being part of a culture or a behavior, we do not see ourselves fit in. I think this is something most people can relate to - we all know how hard it can be to be open and tolerant, when we are put under pressure.

How was the show developed?

TOURIST is part two of a trilogy exploring the extraordinary experiences of ordinary life and how we inhabit different arenas of our lives; WALK-MAN, takes place in public space and the streets we walk everyday. RESIDENT takes place at home and our private spaces.TOURIST was supposed to take place abroad and explore how we behave when we visit other places, but because of COVID it ended up investigating what happens when we are forced to take a closer look at the people right next to us.

Each part is made using devising methods, which means you don’t have a script or story, but just decide on a starting point, one this case the arena, and then explore what is happening here. What kind of characters exist here? What kind of situations arise? What kind of objects are available? Then we take some of these element and play with them. Try adding poetry, absurdity, physicality and let them reveal different things about us as social beings.

Who would you like to come and see it?

Everybody! I think we try to make something that can be for everybody and for most ages.

People who like to be entertained when they go to the theatre, have a laugh and a cry, will definitely enjoy this show.

What would you like audiences to take away from it?

We are all the center of our own universe and the most important person to ourselves, so we tend to forget that everybody around us is just as important and are going through as many things as us. TOURIST remind us that we should try and be more patient and curious with other people and different cultures.
