BWW caught up with Sid Singh to chat about bringing Table For One to the 2023 Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

Tell us a bit about Table For One

Hey! This is my brand new show that combines stand-up comedy with human rights fundraising! Its all about how 5 years ago I started helping refugees win legal battles (all the way up to the US Supreme Court!)...by accident!  It's a show about moving to New York, becoming homeless, almost learning Spanish, going to law school in San Francisco, getting deported from India while in Germany, and then at the end of it all: becoming an American human-rights-volunteering comedian...in Europe.

What do you do when you're not performing comedy?

I use my law degree to volunteer as a human rights lawyer! That's why I've decided to combine the two into my shows!

What sets this apart from other comedy shows at the festival?

This is the rare political comedy show that is personal and also puts its money where my mouth is. 50 percent of everything you donate at the end of my show gets sent to the Center for Gender and Refugee Studies. They're a legal aid organization in San Francisco that has taken the US government to court over and over again to fight to treat refugees like humans. Honestly, ideally, this starts becoming the norm at comedy shows from so-called political comedians (where they actually fight for the things they believe in) and stops being unique about my show.

Who would you like to come and see you?

Anyone. I'd love more people of colour in my audiences, but honestly, I'll take anyone who wants to laugh. People seem to think that because I'm a progressive person, that I'll be afraid of conservatives coming to my show, but actually they're often the best audience members that I've had in the past 5 years. I'm American, so I have an unearned ability to believe in myself despite the odds being stacked against me. My point being, if you're reading this, come to my show and let me win you over!

What would you like audiences to take away from your show?

That change is possible and can come from the unlikeliest of places. So yeah come to my show. You'll laugh for 60 minutes, have a good time, and then if you donate after, you might be doing more than you realize!
