Clementine comes to Edinburgh this August
BWW catches up with Rosalie Minnitt to chat about bringing Clementine to the 2023 Edinburgh Festival Fringe
Tell us a bit about Clementine
Narcissist to some, icon to millions, Miss Lady Clementine has been winning hearts and minds across the British Isles for over 400 hundred years (approx). Both feared and ridiculed by her peers, she's desperately looking for a husband and the clock is ticking.
How has the show been received so far?
Thankfully, really well! I've been working on the show for just over a year and taken it to lots of different comedy festivals across the UK. I've had three five star reviews and won the Luke Rollason Brighton Fringe bursary too.
The best responses have come from audiences though. A lot of people have come out of the show and said, 'I just really, really needed that. A proper good laugh.' That's the point of the show so when people have said that it improved their week, or mood, even a little bit - I've succeeded.
Why bring it to Edinburgh?
I brought the show up to Edinburgh last year for a work in progress which gave me a chance to get to know the character, work on the show and myself as a performer. This year I'm headed up with a new and improved version of the show and keen for as many new people to meet Miss Lady Clementine as possible - it would be rude not to.
Who would you like to come and see it?
YES. One of my guiding principles was to create a show that I would want to see. I think you can often be tempted to make your work more palatable or jokes more universal in order to pander to audiences but I've tried to stay true to myself. If at any point I've written something that I wouldn't like or wouldn't laugh at, I've had to sit down and figure out what needs to change to make it more me.
What would you like audiences to take away from it?
I want the show to be an hour of pure, unadulterated and, crucially, unhinged escapism. There's nothing better than coming out of a show realising you've completely forgotten where - and who - you are.
Having said that, I like to think of this show as a very elaborate love letter to anyone and everyone trying to navigate this tricky world as a woman - which, sadly, hasn't radically changed all that much. It doesn't make any grand gestures or political points, but it's a fun hour-long reminder to never ignore that little voice inside you, to take up space in this world, especially as a woman, and laugh when things get hard. Take life, especially romantic relationships, a little less seriously. In other words, sit back, relax and enjoy the ride.
