Don't Hold Back comes to Edinburgh this August
BWW caught up with Matty Hutson to chat about bringing Don't Hold Back to the 2023 Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
Tell us a bit about Don't Hold Back.
I'm Matty Hutson – the world's first emo comedian. My show is called Don't Hold Back – and it's about trying, and failing to fit in. I didn't want to be another musical comedian playing the acoustic guitar – so I've learned a load of new instruments especially for the show – The crowd can join in a little as well - but no pressure.
How integral are the songs to the storytelling?
There's nothing worse than watching a musical comedian that can't tell a joke – so the songs are mixed with bits of stand-up and stories. It's the most honest I've ever been on stage – and everything I say in the show is true - all a lot of the true stuff is also embarrassing.
With this being your Fringe debut, do you think you know what to expect from the festival?
I'm expecting a record deal and to be Taylor Swift's next boyfriend.
Who would you like to come and see Don't Hold Back?
Chuck Berry, Neil Diamond and a small hoard of my Anglo-Saxon forefathers.
What would you like audiences to take away from it?
If they're still laughing on the way home I'm happy. I find things all a bit too confusing and I'm not the guy to come to for the meaning of life. But if you find it all a bit confusing too I think you'll enjoy it.
