BWW catches up with James Rowland to chat about bringing Piece of Work to the 2023 Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

Tell us a bit about Piece of Work.

I’m quite excited about the Piece of Work to be honest - I’m working on the music at the moment. As a story that exists in the space between the infinite mess of the universe and chicken burgers I’m hoping it’ll be an interesting and lovely time.

Having had numerous successes at the festival, do you think you know what to expect from the Fringe?

Ha! Cheers, that’s a nice thing to say. I guess I don’t really expect anything in particular other than getting to do a new show for brilliant audiences, being inspired by the people I meet, sometimes watching other people’s shows (then always always being delighted that I have), and pints.

What are the benefits to performing at Summerhall?
Well, for a start, Summerhall is about the best place to sit and drink in the whole of the Fringe… I have two main reasons: that it’s frankly an honour to share a venue with the other artists working there every year, and also that the Anatomy Lecture Theatre is the room I have performed in the most in the world and I love it.I feel like there’s an immense value in having that consistency and connection to a place.

Who would you like to come and see Piece of Work?

Ha, well if you’ve read this far you’re either a completist or only half reading it or you don’t find the way I’ve answered these questions objectionable. You. You should come (and tell me if you do for my rigorous market research).

Anyone who fancies it really.

What would you like audiences to take away from it?
Well, I guess to like it, to think it was time and money well spent. Both are scarce resources and it’s a privilege to try to make beautiful things that are worth them.
