BWW catches up with Gabby Killick to chat about bringing Conversations With My Agent to the 2023 Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

Tell us a bit about Conversations With My Agent.

The story is about my dark, twisted, and hilarious relationship with showbusiness.

My agent tells me I’m not far from being cancelled and I need to “play it safe” but where’s the fun in that!? I’ve always had an issue with the following authority. And if you think rules should be broken then this is the show for you.

Why was this a story you wanted to share?

My whole life has been centered around my love for the performing arts. And as I've got older I’ve realized it's actually a really unfair and toxic industry. And because I'm exposed to it every day, I thought it made sense to talk about it on stage. I’ve written about my ex’s before so why not talk about my moody girlfriend Showbizness?

Having performed sell-out shows for several years at the Fringe do you think you know what to expect from the festival?

HAHA No way!  Don’t get it twisted, yes I’ve sold out shows but I’ve also performed for really small crowds before like  2-person small crowds. The Fringe is wildly unpredictable so I’ve learnt for my sanity not to expect anything. So that if something does happen it's a plus.

Who would you like to come and see you?

I want everyone to come and see it! However, please don’t come if you’re easily offended. My banter can be a bit brutal and if you’re not into that, we could save ourselves both some time haha!

What would you like audiences to take away from it?

After seeing it they’ll probably be like “Umm, what the f*ck was that…”

Many of the themes in the show fall under the umbrella of cancel culture. And the running question throughout the show is “how far is too far”?

The world is so sensitive right now and that makes it very difficult to follow any advice I get.  I get told all the time to write honestly about my thoughts and feelings but at the same time, I get told I’m not allowed to offend anyone so which one is it? Because it can’t be both. If I cannot offend then I cannot be honest.

We are a generation of imperfect people, who expect each other to be perfect. And that's difficult to navigate.

Gabby Killick’s new comedy show ‘Conversations With My Agent’ is at the Gilded Balloon Teviot – Lounge at 3.00pm from 2nd – 27th August (not 14TH) for tickets go to www.edfringe.com
