Buffy Revamped returns to Edinburgh this August
BWW caught up with Brendan Murphy to chat about bringing Buffy Revamped to the 2023 Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
Tell us a bit about Buffy:Revamped
It's all 7 seasons of Buffy The Vampire Slayer in 70 action-packed minutes as told by the bleach-blonde cockney vampire that knows it best - Spike. It's a multi award-winning parody show that's been selling out across the UK, Ireland and Australia and picking up rave reviews wherever it goes, and I can't wait to bring it back to the Edinburgh Fringe where it all began!
Having performed the show last year, do you think you know what to expect from the festival?
Every year is different at the fringe, so you can't quite be sure exactly what to expect. However, some things are pretty much guaranteed - it'll rain every day (if only for a few minutes), there'll be bars open for business no matter what time you're out and about, and if you see a large group of goths anywhere outside of Greyfriars Kirkyard then they'll most likely be heading to our show at the EICC.
Do you think it will be a challenge performing two shows this year?
It can certainly be a challenge, but at least this year I'll only be doing Buffy Revamped all the way through the festival. My improvised comedy show, BattleActs!, only runs for the final week of the fringe and the other parody show I've written, FRIEND (The One With Gunther), is thankfully being performed by the brilliant Joseph Maudsley of Potted Potter and Reduced Shakespeare Company fame. So hopefully I should be fine!
Where has Buffy Revamped been since the festival last year?
We've been on the road for about 6 months this year and clocked up nearly 100 performances, playing at some great venues across the UK, Ireland and Australia, including Birmingham REP, Clapham Grand, Leeds Playhouse, York Theatre Royal, Dublin's Gaiety & 3Olympia, Cardiff New Theatre, Glasgow Pavilion, two very fun weeks at Adelaide Fringe and an astonishing 5 sold-out shows at the Lowry in Salford!
Who would you like to come and see it?
Any fans, old or young, of Buffy The Vampire Slayer and 90s rock music. This is a real celebration of all things Sunnydale, so if that's something that floats your boat then you can rest assured this is the place for you. Come in cosplay, spend an hour in a room with your people and then geek out together chatting all things Buffy in the bar afterwards... Oh, and it would be cool if James Marsters and Sarah Michelle Gellar could make it too, but I think they might be busy saving the world.
