EDINBURGH 2022: RUNAWAY PRINCESS Q&A Image

BWW catches up with Mary Goggin to chat about bringing Runaway Princess to the 2022 Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

Tell us a bit about Runaway Princess.

Runaway Princess is a 100% true story of a sexually repressed Irish Catholic girl ..a hopeful tale of heroin, hooking and happiness.

It is riveting and life changing. It is my story

Why did you feel this was an important story to share?

I have always known I had to write this to story to pass on what I have been given. To share my secrets and give others permission to share and heal theirs. And join the human race. We are all the same.

The two key traits of alcoholism and addiction are isolation and inability to communicate and this has helped me overcome the latter. I did not want to be on my deathbed saying...I wish I had...

Where has it been performed so far?

2017 Solocom, The PIT, NYC United Solo 2018 "Best Storyteller" at Theater Row, , Frigid Festival NYC, 2019, 2019 Charm City "Fringiest Show Award, "The Artist" City Island NY, Galway Fringe, "Best Actor" 2019, The Tank, Rochester Fringe 2021,The Cell , 2020 Virtual Performances, Marsh Intl Solo Fest, Winner "Directors Choice 2022, Estrogenius 2022, Under Saint Marks, NYC, Aisling Community. This is the first performance in the UK and I am so excited and want everyone to see it.

What do you hope audiences take away from it?

Not to judge someone's insides based on their outsides.

I hope that parents will ask their children "Are you OK?". I would like to go some way to normalize emotions; our emotional state is just as important as our physical health and if we want to prevent this from happening there needs to be a shift towards the normalization that we have emotions for a reason, they are our roadmap to life and suppressing them can lead to some ugly places. I hope they leave with "wow that Mary Goggin is amazing" . But most of all I want them to leave with hope, positivity and a strengthened belief in miracles.
