EDINBURGH 2022: Lottie Plachett Took A Hatchet Q&A
Tell us a bit about 'Lottie Plachett Took A Hatchet.'
Lottie Plachett is a camp comedy based on the infamous American Lizzie Borden murder case. It's a hilarious romp through murder, the installation of a toilet, and a love that should never ever speak its name. It's a high-camp, high-stakes comedy that takes shots at our modern world. It's fast-paced and rude in a world that needs to laugh. We take shots, big ones, and judging from our audiences so far, they're very much paying off.
Where might we recognise some of the team from?
Tom Lenk, who plays Pansy, is most recognizable from his stint on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but will also be a familiar face to the Fringe, from his star turn as Tilda Swinton in Tilda Swinton Answers an Ad on Craigslist. Tom Detrinis, who plays Molly the Maid, also directed Tilda and will be doing his own solo show at this year's Fringe. Ryan Garcia has appeared at the Fringe in Thirty-Minute Musicals, and Lauren Lopez was an original member of Star Kids. Justin Elizabeth Sayre is most known for their show, The Meeting at Joe's Pub at The Public, as well as writing for 2 Broke Girls, and appearing on HBO's The Comeback with Lisa Kudrow.
Where has it been performed so far?
The play was first read through a new works program at LaMaMa Experimental Theatre. But since most of the cast live in Los Angeles, we've been lucky to perform the play at the legendary Casita Del Campo in Silverlake. It's an amazing space that has been the home to drag legends like Jackie Beat and Dina Martina but also debuts theatre and solo work on a regular basis. The play thus far has been greeted with enormous laughs and has garnered a devoted and playful audience that's longing for more.
Why bring it to Edinburgh?
It's always been a dream. Edinburgh is where so much amazing work is presented. Comedy and drama and plays and solo work. It's the best in the world, and we want to be part of something with not only such a fantastic history but also such a forward-reaching vision of what comedy and theatre can be.
Do you think you know what to expect from the Fringe?
It's going to be hard, surely. But everything worth having always is. I think we're most excited to present this work to the world. The play is a joy to perform with this group of amazing actors, and we're all excited to get started. It will be hectic and thrilling with so much to see and do. We're thrilled and can't wait for it all to begin!
