EDINBURGH 2022: CONFETTI Q&A Image

BWW catches up with Will Jackson to chat about bringing Confetti to the 2022 Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

Tell us a bit about Confetti.

Confetti is a queer rom com which follows event planner Felix as he organises his best friend's wedding. He's very highly strung and wants to make sure the whole event goes perfectly. However, things begin to go awry when he has his own little romance along the way. Will he be able to balance pulling off the wedding of the century whilst keeping his new secret romance under wraps? You'll have to come and watch the show to find out!

Why do you think it is important to tell this story?

I wanted to write a show that was a classic British rom com but from the 'Gay Best Friends' perspective. I always found whenever I watched a Richard Curtis film or a Nora Ephron movie I'd be much more engaged in the eccentric, supportive friends who'd back up the protagonists, than I ever was with the main couple. So that was my starting point.

The show's also a love letter to the events and hospitality industry which was decimated by Covid. In every scene, we visit locations and events that we all missed out on over the lockdowns, from whacky exercise classes to fancy gallery openings to cheesy romantic first dates on the town.

Where might we have seen you before?

I was last up in Edinburgh in 2019 with my show, Yours Sincerely which has since toured over 100 performances all over the UK including to Soho Theatre and Bristol Tobacco Factory. But the highlight of my cv was last year, when I was an extra in Midsomer Murders.

Who would you recommend comes to see it?

Anyone who's a sucker for a romcom or just wants a bit of fabulous escapism with lots of laughs. It's very funny, very romantic and in this bumper year of weddings, it's very timely.

What do you hope audiences take away from it?

A great night out! The play starts at the Hen Night of the bride, so as soon as the audience arrive they're treated as guests and are given party bags, which have fun things for them inside but also tools to help create the magic of the play.
