EDINBURGH 2018: BWW Q&A- The Antiscians Image

BWW catches up with Ryan Napier and Courtney Oliphant to chat about bringing The Antiscians to the 2018 Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

Tell us a bit about The Antiscians.

The show is about a warlock named Watho, conquered by the turmoil of grief, keeps two girls in isolation. When the girls meet for the first time, they're challenged by their differences and strengthened by their decisions to overcome them. The Antiscians covers themes such as grief, desire and the strengths of diversity.

What was the inspiration for the story?

The initial inspirations of our show is from MacDonald's short story, "The Day Boy and the Night Girl". George MacDonald was a Scottish poet, author, and Christian minister, and was a major influence in the fantasy genre for generations, even becoming mentor to C.S. Lewis. MacDonald's stories provoked our love for the fantasy genre; a genre we don't typically see on stage outside of children's theater.

Why bring it to Edinburgh?

We love that despite the fact you meet so many different people during Edinburgh Fringe, we are all united in the love for storytelling through theatre. We couldn't think of a better place to tell our story in times such as this or a place such as Edinburgh.

Having been to the festival before, do you think you know what to expect?

We last came to Edinburgh as ensemble members in the "Why Do You Stand There in the Rain?" (Won the 2012 Fringe First Award)

Now coming back as actors/writers/ and producers we are already learning many new things and expect to continue to learn.

Who would you recommend come to see The Antiscians?

Our show appeals to a wide range of people. Kids 8+ should be able to easily follow the story and marvel at the physicality, while adults will identify with the themes, connect with the characters, and enjoy and the fresh new take on a classic but often overlooked fairy tale.
