EDINBURGH 2018: BWW Q&A- Barry Loves You Image

BWW catches up with Barry Ferns to chat about bringing Barry Loves You to the 2018 Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
Tell us a bit about Barry Loves You

Barry Loves You is my new show. It's a funny show forged through months at Angel Comedy and on the comedy circuit in London. It's also about connection, sharing, essentially all the things comedy should be anyway. Like love, it is light in parts, intimate in parts, intense in parts, silly and frivolous in parts. Generally, we only laugh with the people we love, so it seemed a good title for the show.

Why do you feel it is particularly relevant just now?
Usually when people talk about "Love" it's met with a cynical "eargh" but maybe right now there's too much cynicism in this auld world? With Trump, Brexit, Global Warming, it's such a negative world-vibe. It's important to focus on the positive stuff too I think (while not blinding ourselves to the terrible stuff of course). Love. Why did it become a word that we shiver to hear? Connection, sharing, laughing, love. Cynical people welcome.

Where else might we know you from?
I have been a man of many paths. I have done shows on top of Arthurs Seat for the last 10 years - in 2012, and 2013 doing it every single day of the festival. I've won the Malcolm Hardee award and the Mervyn Stutter Spirit of the Fringe award. I also started Angel Comedy and The Bill Murray pub in London. It's the UK's only comedian bought and backed venue. It was kickstarted 2 years ago and now runs over 50 shows a week! A collective of comedians coming together to make accessible comedy where people can learn and laugh together.

What are the perks of doing a Pay What You Want show?
Pay What you Want is great. I think EVERYTHING in life should be pay what you want. If it's a good show people will pay more, most people are honest and want to support good entertainment and art. It also means people are more willing to take a chance. If you HAVE to pay £15 for a show you're not likely to take a chance on an unknown act. Free or PWYW allows everyone to experiment and be creative with who they watch and who they perform to!

Who would you recommend comes to see Barry Loves You?
Everyone is welcome. There might be some intense revelations during the show - it's all about connection and sharing after all. So anyone genuinely interested in human connection and laughing a lot and having an hour of entertainment they'll never forget (however good or bad their memory glands are).
