After a European tour, Out of Chaos bring their celebrated Unmythable to The Vaults. Devised by the company on the lines of something Reduced Shakespeare Company might do and directed by Mike Tweddle & Paul O'Mahony, it celebrates Greek mythology by putting its stories together in a big pot luck.
Jason and his band of brothers, the Argonauts, are setting on their quest to find the Golden Fleece. On their journey, they'll share the adventures of gods and heroes, taking the crowd in the middle of the action and delighting them with funny sketches.
Physical comedy and tongue-in-cheek songs accompany the theme of the piece and serving as a visual oxymoron for the savage cruelty often carried out in the myths. Occasionally aided by voiceover, the three actresses go all in in their depictions to deliver amusing performances
While some tales are presented forwardly by the cast, others are told indirectly by the characters to one another. This throws the play off-balance at times, as some of the quick transitions between the part seem to come without reason.
Sibling rivalry, downright murder, and a good dose of incest make for a fast paced and upbeat show. Unmythable is an unpretentious piece of theatre that involves the audience in the fun and meets them halfway with simple and honest comedy.
Unmythable runs at VAULT Festival until 3 March.
