October has come to a close, but not without a few creeps, crawls, and all-out scares-- in the ghouls trick or treating, and on a stage in Greenwich Village. The Players Theatre Short Play and Musical Festival and Be Bold! Productions encourage playwrights to mine this precious resource by offering an annual BOO-themed festival each October. Scroll down for a peek at this year's shows!
Each week four or five original short plays or musicals, by a variety of playwrights were presented at The Players Theatre in the 3rd floor Steve and Marie Sgouros Black Box located at 115 MacDougal Street in the West Village.
Playwrights from all over the country submitted, and the Players' festival panel selected 15 plays for presentation. The playwrights are responsible for their own production and act as producer for their piece. A"Best of the Week" production was selected by audience vote and a $100 prize awarded. Many of the playwrights have participated in other iterations of the thrice-annual Short Plays Festival The Players Theatre.
The winner of week one was Trump by 70% by Mary Teitelbaum which asks, "What is a more horrifying topic than #45?" The winner of the second week was The Masque of the Red Death, an adaptation of the Poe classic by Chris Clarke. The winner of the final week was The Radium Girls: A Jaw Dropping New Musical by Amanda D'Archangelis, Sami Horneff, & Lisa Mongillo a campy musical based on real-life female factory workers who contracted radiation poisoning from painting watch dials with self-luminous paint.
A complete listing of the plays featured in the BOO festival is below. The Short Play and Musical Festival (SPF) is presented three times a year. The October theme is always horror, the February theme is SEX!, and the June theme is NYC.
