The Square One Theatre Company in Stratford, Connecticut will open its 28th Anniversary Season with the Connecticut premiere of Core Values beginning November 2 and continuing through November 19, 2017.
Steven Levenson's astute new play, Core Values, is "a comedy, though a dark one...a well-observed study of a dysfunctional workplace, with hilarious one-liners and sight gags" (New York Post). This "laugh-out-loud funny, sigh-out-loud sad new play captures the spirit of the age; and it will feel all too familiar to anyone who's ever found themselves caught in the hamster wheel of a dying industry." (Time Out NY).
With the world-around him changing at a dizzying pace, CEO Richard, the owner of a small, struggling travel agency clings to the work values he holds most dear: teamwork, loyalty and the incalculable importance of a good trust fall. However, it takes a weekend staff retreat for him to realize that his team-building exercises are not enough to stave off the realities of a rapidly evolving marketplace. In a dismal and graying conference room, Richard and three of his employees are expected to review sales reports, perform trust exercises and set long-term goals for an increasingly uncertain future. Divorced, single dad Richard, meanwhile, is just looking to keep his business as well as himself together.
Playwright Steven Levenson is also the 2017 Tony Award-winning writer of the hit Broadway musical Dear Evan Hanson.
The cast of Core Values includes three Square One Subscriber Award-Winners Jim Buffone, DANIELLE SULTINI (both from Milford, Ct) and DAVID VICTOR (Fairfield) plus a newcomer to Square One Theatre, Lynnette Victoria (Bridgeport).
The Square One Theatre's 28th season also includes Bruce Graham's White Guy on the Bus, "an unusually frank drama...This one goes for the jugular." (Chicago Tribune) running March 1 through March18, 2018) and James Lescene's The Absolute Brightness of Leonard Pelky, which "leaves you beaming with joy" (The New York Times) running May 3 through May 20, 2018
Performances for each production begins the first Thursday (only) at 7pm and continue Fridays at 8pm, Saturdays at 4pm and 8pm and Sundays at 2pm.
