SHIFT + SPACE | OUT OF THE DEPTHS BY CUTPURSE
Friday 12th July, 7.30 - 9pm and Saturday 13th July, 7.30pm - 9pm
Devised from Oscar Wilde's prison letters - written to his lover when he lost his freedom and his status to a charge of 'gross indecency' - this show takes place in a queer club scene where freedom and expression unite people, despite the familiar threat to their community. Mixing the narrative of Oscar Wilde’s journey with work devised based on the experiences of the LGBTQ+ community today, and tied together with a live DJ’s music and devised movement, this show explores how we find hope in the darkest places.
This is a production in development, previously performed at ‘A Pinch of Vault’ with the Vault Festival in February 2024. We are experimenting with creating a show that can bridge theatre and club performances, with the goal of bringing it to club spaces in 2025. Through doing so we hope to create an avenue for theatre and club culture to support one another.

Find out more about Cutpurse
Cutpurse was founded in 2022 by Jasmine Silk and Iona Bremner to bring old texts to life in new ways through our collaborations with musicians. We created 'Mariam' in with The Old Church in Stoke Newington, which was the first original play written by a woman in English with live music from rock-band FightMilk, which has since featured in Elizabeth Kolkovich’s ‘Looking For Mariam’ Documentary. Out of the Depths was initially developed through the ‘Pinch of Vault’ Festival in February 2024, working with a live DJ, and aims to make a show which can be performed in club spaces.
