This coming-of-age comedy blending multimedia, puppetry and music, debuts at the Edinburgh Festival this August, and will play at The Space, Jury's Inn (V260) from today, 2 - 24 August 2013.
Join our girl-next-door, first-generation Chinese-Canadian Joy Lo, who moves to London to write her first play. As reality and dreamworlds collide with culture and creative process, our protagonist writes her story and life-despite her nagging mother's best efforts.
Meanwhile, in the supernatural Chinese Metaforest, young Mei Li has just two days to find an elixir of immortality before the forest disappears forever. She meets an eccentric orange hippo who threatens to prevent her from battling a ferocious monster guarding a secret that could change everything.
Will she find what she's looking for? The path is dangerous and difficult. Neither survival nor success is guaranteed. But sometimes we have to take the risk and find the adventure in adversity.
The production features an all-Chinese cast including, Chinese-English Siu-See Hung, British-born Sino-Mauritian Julie Cheung-Inhin and Chinese-Canadian Anh Chu. The play explores the issues surrounding the Chinese-diaspora experience, drawn from those experienced by the cast.
This inaugural production by We Flew Big is written by TV editor/producer turned actress and playwright, Anh Chu. She is the Artistic Director at We Flew Big. Lydia Parker (Theatre 503) is the director. Jolie Booth of Kriya Arts is the producer.
