Theatre Tulsa Announces Shows for 97th Season Image

Theatre Tulsa has announced titles and creative teams for the theater's 97th anniversary season, which will launch August 9, 2019.

The season kicks off with Mamma Mia opening August 9 and closing September 1, 2019. ABBA's hits tell the hilarious story of a young woman's search for her birth father. This sunny and funny tale unfolds on a Greek island paradise. On the eve of her wedding, a daughter's quest to discover the identity of her father brings three men from her mother's past back to the island they last visited 20 years ago. The story-telling magic of ABBA's timeless songs propels this enchanting tale of love, laughter and friendship, creating an unforgettable show. A mother. A daughter. Three possible dads. And a trip down the aisle you'll never forget!

The Drowsy Chaperone is next opening October 11 through October 20, 2019. A musical comedy fan known only as "Man in Chair" puts on his favorite record, the original cast recording of a fictitious 1928 musical called The Drowsy Chaperone, and in an instant the record comes magically to life. His apartment is filled up and swept away by a jazz-age evening of madcap delight. Out of the woodwork come two Broadway stars on the eve of their wedding, a bumbling best man, a desperate theater producer and his moll, a not-so-bright hostess, two gangsters (--or are they pastry chefs?), an aviatrix, a misguided Don Juan and a very heavily intoxicated chaperone.

The American musical favorite, The Music Man opens January 10, 2020, follows traveling salesman Harold Hill as he cons the people of River City, Iowa into buying uniforms for a boys' band that he vows to organize-despite the fact he doesn't know a trombone from a treble clef. His plans to skip town are foiled when he falls for Marian, the town librarian. The classic score features such standards as "76 Trombones," "'Till There Was You," and "Trouble." The show has a closing night set for January 26, 2020.

Based on Ingmar Bergman's film Smiles of a Summer Night, A Little Night Music is set in a weekend country house in turn of the century Sweden, bringing together surprising liaisons, long simmering passions and a taste of love's endless possibilities. The story centers on the elegant actress Desirée Armfeldt and the spider's web of sensuality, intrigue and desire that surrounds her. This witty and wildly romantic musical comes to Theatre Tulsa March 12 through 22, 2020.

To finish out the season is Matilda: The Musical! Matilda is an extraordinary little girl who dares to take a stand and change her destiny. When she has finally had enough of her unscrupulous parents and tyrannical headmistress, she enlists the help of her friends-and favorite teacher Miss Honey-and bravely takes matters into her own hands to become the biggest little hero. Matilda is sure to delight and empower audiences of all generations from April 24 until May 2, 2020.
