Here is a sneak peek at their rehearsal this week for "Notice Me Horton", during which Kiri's poignant quotation was discussed

(*buzz, buzz, buzz*)

With fantasies you wish could exist beyond your head,

You must take the first leap,

You must get OUT of bed!

Slam off the alarm clock,

And quickly do dress.

It's time to get busy,

Expect a BIG mess!

For your journey is long,

And definitely not easy.

It's a serious mission-

(Though some argue it's cheesy):

Find that thing that makes your heart leap and soar,

Then never let it walk out the door!

"You've both discovered something important that you really care about. It's just not together." (Kiri-Lyn on "Notice Me Horton")

How many times have we each experienced this scenario in our lives?

When we first began this process, one moment really stood out to me. Kiri pointed out how many people consider Seussical to be a fluffy show, lacking resonance or meaning. Yes, there are some kooky numbers designed to amaze and entertain! But under all of those bright colourful layers lie characters searching for the same relatable things as all of us search for.

Identity. Validation. Reciprocation. Horton and Gertrude are searching for all of these things during their bumpy rides through the world of Seuss(ical).

Horton is determined to fight for his unwavering desire to be a good elephant and friend to the Whos. Poor Miss Gertrude McFuzz just wants Horton to finally see she exists and reciprocate her love. These two star-crossed characters face many internal and external challenges as they strive for their goals - shaping two beautiful stories of self-discovery and fighting for what they love.

Matthew Barker (Horton) and April Wong (Gertrude) have already begun to bring a genuine, heartfelt sentiment in crafting their characters. With the skillful help of Kiri-Lyn Muir and Kieren MacMillan, they are well on their way to sharing the truth behind the journeys of these two misfit dreamers.

Will these two fall in love?

Is it meant to be?

Stick around and maybe you just might see!

Randolph Academy's Seussical will run from November 29th to December 3rd at the Annex Theatre, Toronto, ON, Canada.
