Spoiler Alert! Recap and Review: Night Three of THE VOICE's Battle Rounds 10/20; Full Results! by Matt Tamanini - October 20, 2014 We are halfway through THE VOICE's Season 7 Battle Rounds, and I honestly couldn't tell you a single person who has won so far. Though there have been many memorable moments, the majority of them have involved the superstar coaches. However, tonight, I think that is going to change. In a performance preview video Team Pharrell beltresses DaNica Shirey and Toia Jones absolutely destroy Beyonce's 'Halo' in every possible good way. I have barely had a goosebump all season, let alone the full-body bumps that this performance gave me. Check it out for yourself below. BWW Interview: Frances Fisher Discusses Last Night's Explosive RESURRECTION by Matt Tamanini - October 20, 2014 As more and more of the mystery unfolds on ABC's hit drama RESURRECTION, the secrets and emotions continue to build up. On last night's episode, Lucille, played by the fantastic Frances Fisher, couldn't hold in her feelings anymore, letting fly some verbal bombs that will surely have a long-lasting impact on the Langston family. On Friday, I spoke with Fisher about the episode, Lucille's relationship with recently returned-from-the-dead Mother-in-Law Margaret, and what's coming up for her character; and much like her Lucille last night, she had a lot to say! Spoiler Alert! Recap and Review: AMERICAN HORROR STORY: FREAK SHOW Creates Conflict, Context in Best Hour Yet by Matt Tamanini - October 15, 2014 If you are reading this review, you probably loved last week's two-hour AMERICAN HORROR STORY: FREAK SHOW premiere as much as I did, but while last week thrived on a sensory assault of spectacular images and fascinating character portrayals, tonight's episode found inventive ways to not only deliver those incredible aesthetics again, but to also set up what has all the makings of an incredibly compelling season of stories. Simply said, this was one of the finest hours of television writing I have seen in a long time. Spoiler Alert! Recap and Review: Night Two of THE VOICE's Battle Rounds 10/14; Full Results, Reviews, & Pictures! by Matt Tamanini - October 14, 2014 I have been pretty vocal about the fact that I don't love THE VOICE's Battle Rounds. The whole point of a singing competition is to out sing your competitors. However, in the Battles, your future on the show is, in part, in the hands of your collaborator; how does that make sense? Even if the two singers create a great duet, by definition, each has to play background singer at some point in the song. How does that help you determine who is the better of the two singers? If the goal is to find the best singer possible, then you should let the singers give you their best possible performance. Spoiler Alert! Recap and Review: THE VOICE Battle Rounds Night One 10/13; Full Results and Pictures! by Matt Tamanini - October 13, 2014 Well, tonight is the night when I generally begin to lose interest in NBC's juggernaut singing competition THE VOICE. As we transition from the ever compelling Blind Auditions to the generally disappointing Battle Rounds, it always annoys me that so much time and attention is focused on the coaches and the guest mentors. Yes, I love the fact that the singers are getting expert tutelage, but the show's attention should be, you know, on the contestants. While this is the only area where THE VOICE doesn't rise to the level of AMERICAN IDOL, for me, it has often been a deal breaker. I never feel the connection to THE VOICE contestants that I do to those on IDOL. Hopefully now that I am reviewing every single performance, I will actually get invested in some of the singers. Spoiler Alert! Recap and Review: THE AFFAIR is All Kinds of Cliche and Annoyance by Matt Tamanini - October 12, 2014 When I first heard about Showtime's new drama THE AFFAIR, I was a bit confused. The majority of the premium channel's new shows boast a major star in the lead; William H. Macy in SHAMELESS, Don Cheadle in HOUSE OF LIES, Liev Schreiber in RAY DONOVAN, Matt LeBlanc in EPISODES… ok maybe they don't all have a big star. However, the most well-known actor in THE AFFAIR is Charlie Conway, Pacey Witter, Peter Bishop, Joshua Jackson, and he's not even one of the main stars. That dubious honor belongs to THE WIRE's Dominic West and LUTHER's Ruth Wilson. Also rounding out the main characters is the always delightful, but hardly a household name, Maura Tierney. Spoiler Alert! Recap and Review: HOMELAND's Carrie Finds Her Sanity; Quinn Loses His in 'Shalwar Kameez' by Matt Tamanini - October 12, 2014 I don't want to get too carried away, but this week's HOMELAND actually felt a bit like the HOMELAND of old. Now, it didn't have the intrigue of the early Brody days, but it did have an exceptionally stable and competent Carrie, emotions that make sense in the context of the greater story, and the hints of a great conspiracy afoot. Spoiler Alert! FREAK SHOW Might Just Be Best AMERICAN HORROR STORY Yet by Matt Tamanini - October 8, 2014 When I was a kid, my parents never let me go to any of the traveling carnivals and circuses that crisscrossed the Midwest. They were afraid that the Ferris Wheels, Roller Coasters, and Tilt-a-Whirls that were hastily assembled in rundown shopping center parking lots weren't safe, and that if I was to climb into one of the rides, I could become the victim of a terrible tragedy. Having watched the two hour premiere of AMERICAN HORROR STORY: FREAK SHOW, I now think that my parents significantly underestimated just how dangerous those wayfaring fairs actually were. Spoiler Alert! THE VOICE Final Blind Audition Recap 10/6; Full Results, Pictures! by Matt Tamanini - October 6, 2014 40 down, eight to go! As we enter the final night of THE VOICE's Blind Auditions, each coach is still looking for two contestants to round out his or her team. While there hasn't been the top-level talent that we've seen on THE VOICE in previous seasons, the breadth of talent is still as impressive as it ever has been; in fact it still dwarfs that of AMERICAN IDOL. Spoiler Alert! Did HOMELAND Return to Form After Brody-Induced Disaster? by Matt Tamanini - October 5, 2014 The brilliance of the first season of HOMELAND lay in the fact that complicated people were making complicated decisions. We weren't presented with a black-and-white world where the good guys always wore red, white, and blue. Instead, we saw people wrestling with the same geo-political issues that our nation was dealing with at the time. It was confusing, it was dirty, it was dangerous, but it was captivating and unique. Since that first season, the show has devolved into one that no longer wrestles with big issues, it instead has been driven by the same thing that drives 95% of every other show on television; love. Spoiler Alert! THE VOICE Blind Auditions Night Four Recap 9/30; Full Results! by Matt Tamanini - September 30, 2014 Three down, two to go. There were only two Blind Auditions left coming into tonight, and the four VOICE teams were aleady starting to take shape, a fact that the coaches remind us of multiple times throughout the broadcast. Now that each coach has a substantial stable of singers, they are starting to be a bit pickier on who gets them to hit their buttons. Though I believe that this was hands down (pun intended?) the best Blind Audition of the season, there were still some questionable decisions of the chair-turning variety. Spoiler Alert! THE VOICE Recap for Blind Audition Night Three 9/29; Full Results! by Matt Tamanini - September 29, 2014 The first two nights of THE VOICE's Blind Auditions last week, presented us with a lot of ups, but a few uncharacteristic downs from a show that prides itself on having the best singers on reality TV, and the third night wasn't much different. That being said NBC's megahit still provides the most compelling audition process on TV, and makes other singing shows (cough AMERICAN IDOL) look like the minor leagues in terms of talent. Spoiler Alert! GOTHAM's Gordon Far Too Super to Be TV Hero by Matt Tamanini - September 29, 2014 Superheroes have been a part of the television landscape almost since the medium was invented. From the days of George Reeves' Superman, to Adam West as Batman, to Hayden Panettiere on HEROES, we have always had a fascination with the idea that extraordinary people, both physically and morally, might be living amongst us. Spoiler Alert! THE VOICE Blind Auditions Night Two Recap 9/23; Full Results & Pics! by Matt Tamanini - September 23, 2014 Two days into THE VOICE Blind Auditions, and I feel like we have already seen more talent than we did in the entire AMERICAN IDOL audition process this past season. While Night One wasn't one of THE VOICE's best premieres, Night Two brought a crap-ton of talent. Spoiler Alert! THE VOICE Season 7 Premiere Recap; Full Results & Pics! by Matt Tamanini - September 22, 2014 I'm sorry Blake Shelton, I have rooted for your team since the first season of THE VOICE, but no longer. Yes, you are still one funny, country rapscallion, but I will not be pulling for you to take home your fourth VOICE title. Yes, your single finger 'Pick Me' gesture is still one of the most endearingly dorky things this side of Zooey Deschanel, but I can't in good conscience pick you to win. Yes, I did root for your future wife Miranda Lambert on the first season of NASHVILLE STAR, but I can't root for you anymore. The reason? Two words: Gwen Stefani. BWW Spoiler Alert!: The Clock Runs Out on Fan Favorite in 24: LIVE ANOTHER DAY Season Finale by Matt Tamanini - July 14, 2014 Tonight the clock ran out on 24: LIVE ANOTHER DAY, 'the limited event television series' that brought 'Merica's favorite morally ambiguous super-spy, Jack Bauer back to Fox. After spending four years as a fugitive enemy-of-the-state, Jack was back to save President James Heller from a terrorist plot(s) designed to kill the President and turn the world against the United States. BWW Spoiler Alert!: PENNY DREADFUL Elegantly Concludes a Bloody First Season by Matt Tamanini - June 30, 2014 Due to the grandness of PENNY DREADFUL's scale, going into the finale, the show's pacing and habit of ignoring characters and storylines for weeks at a time left me wondering what would actually be revealed in the Season Finale. There were so many different players in Logan's mythology that it felt like he threw so much into Season 1 that could have (should have?) been saved for subsequent seasons. BWW Spoiler Alert!: 5 Major Takeaways from this Week's 24: LIVE ANOTHER DAY by Matt Tamanini - May 5, 2014 After four years of radio silence, FOX has brought back the indomitable Jack Bauer for another harrowing day on 24: LIVE ANOTHER DAY. Despite four years in hiding, Jack (and 24) quickly fall back into the same unrealistic tropes. However, once you are able to suspend your disbelief, 24 is as enjoyable as ever. BWW Spoiler Alert!: 5 Major Takeaways from this Week's ONCE UPON A TIME by Matt Tamanini - May 4, 2014 On Sunday night, ABC aired ONCE UPON A TIMES' penultimate Season 3 episode, 'Kansas.' In it we saw the culmination of a villain's transformation to hero and a whole lot of resolution that makes me wonder what exactly is left to do in the two-hour finale next week. BWW Spoiler Alert!: 5 Major Takeaways from this Week's GRIMM by Matt Tamanini - May 3, 2014 On Friday night, NBC aired the third to last GRIMM of the season. In 'My Fair Wesen' (a nice allusion to the PYGMALION reference Captain Renard makes about the case of the week) we get to know a little bit more about Truble, the new Grimm in town. BWW Spoiler Alert!: 5 Major Takeaways from this Week's ORPHAN BLACK by Matt Tamanini - May 3, 2014 On Saturday night, BBC America aired the third episode of ORPHAN BLACK's second season, “Mingling Its Own Nature with It.” As always, the show provided plenty of twists, surprises, and award-worthy performances. Here are my five biggest takeaways from the episode. |
