On March 1, 2023, the Northern Arizona Playwriting Showcase (NAPS) will launch its 14th annual 10-minute play contest. The showcase will be held the weekend of September 15th.

American regional theaters have seen significant changes since the pandemic began. Broadway actor Quentin Oliver Lee, who most recently starred Off-Broadway in Heather Christian's Oratorio For Living Things, has passed away at age 34 from colon cancer. 

Following an extensive search, the Atlanta Lyric Theatre board of directors has announced the hiring of Colt Chambers as the new Managing Director. In this role, Colt will take the helm and manage all aspects of the organization's day-to-day business operations.

West Valley Arts, in partnership with Fry's Food Stores, a division of the Kroger Family of Companies, commissioned local artist, Mary Shindell (http://www.maryshindell.com), to create an indoor mural for the new Fry's Marketplace in Buckeye. 

Arizona native Chanel Bragg, an artist and passionate advocate for equity, diversity and inclusion, has been named Associate Artistic Director at Arizona Theatre Company.

Theatre Upstairs of Phoenix, AZ and Tyler Boettcher & Lauren Rohs will present an industry staged reading of The Red Wool, a new raucous comedy by Broadway's Jeremy Kareken (Lifespan of a Fact). The industry presentation will take place on Monday, February 10th at a private residence in New York City. Tony Award winning playwright & actor Greg Kotis (Urinetown) will star as King Ashurnasirpal II, leading a Phoenix based cast. The Muny announced today the choreographers and music directors for its Muny Kids and Teens 2020 season. The Muny's flagship education programs, The Muny Kids and Teens are two of nine offerings under The Crawford Taylor Education Initiative. Muny Director of Education, Tali Allen, and Artistic Associate, Michael Baxter, will serve as Artistic Directors for the groups. LIC Arts Open's Gallery One at The Factory LIC, presents artist Julie Comnick's New York debut exhibition Arrangement for a Silent Orchestra, a painting and video project that explores the gradual dissolution of culture in contemporary society through the symbolic ruin of a personal and cultural icon, the violin. Using the violin as a metaphor, Comnick raises questions about the relationship between advancing technology and diminishing cultural heritage, inviting the audience to consider what makes the instrument precious in their own experience, and the impact of its loss.

Technically the effects still work, and I watched as the shocked younger members of the audience witnessed practical effects to contrast all the CGI they had grown up on. PHANTOM OF THE OPERA still has the same magic three decades later.

Quentin Oliver Lee, the man behind the mask - the dynamic singer/actor leads the national company of Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera, now on tour throughout the United States - first stepped onstage in the iconic role during its Memphis run earlier this year and he freely admits that the experience left him eager to return to Tennessee to perform on the stage of Nashville's Andrew Jackson Hall.
