Recapping the start of my second year at college.
A few weeks of the semester have passed, so it’s finally time to discuss how the new term has been going. Personally, I’m having nothing short of a great time as a sophomore at the University of Connecticut. I’m making new friends and I’m continuing to get more involved with extracurriculars. Here’s a brief recap of my semester so far!
To start, I am making lots of new friends this semester. I’ve met tons of new people in my classes simply by striking up a conversation. It can be daunting, but recently I’ve found socializing to come more naturally to me, which is definitely an improvement. My roommate and I have spent a lot of time getting to know each other through long conversations and fun activities. We’ve visited cows, watched the sunset, and battled it out in games of badminton. Recently, we also went stargazing on Horsebarn Hill, which was super fun. I even got to capture a great shot of the Big Dipper constellation!
Academically, I’m enjoying all my classes. One of my favorites is my introductory communication course. My professor is extremely engaging and funny, which makes lectures enjoyable. However, my newswriting class is going to be a challenge simply because it forces me to get out of my comfort zone. I love my professor, but I’ve never been the type of outgoing person who’s comfortable interviewing fellow students, but I am hopeful that I will pick up this skill with ease. Now that I’ve socialized more frequently, I feel more prepared than I would’ve been last year, so I am optimistic that I will adapt and eventually succeed.
This year, I am continuing with two extracurriculars that I am very passionate about. I am a returning member of Her Campus UConn, our chapter of the national magazine for college women. I get to write articles about my interests, which I always love doing. We also have weekly meetings where we participate in bonding activities and get to know other members. If your school has a Her Campus chapter, I highly recommend joining! Joining was one of the best decisions of my college career and I’m so grateful for the talented people I’ve met through this club. I am also returning to the Husky Ambassador Program, which assists in recruiting prospective students through events. I am excited to participate in Husky-For-A-Day again, which is an opportunity for prospective students to shadow a current student and get a feel for what life is like at our university. I always enjoy participating and I’m sure I’ll enjoy it just as much this time around too.
Overall, this semester has been very positive so far, and I am excited to see what the rest of the semester holds for me. While it may get stressful at times, I am confident I have the tools I need to succeed this semester and beyond.
