While the beginning of a new semester can be busy and stressful, it’s always important to remember to pour into the things that you love.
As a senior, my course load is much more specified than in years before. My major is public relations, so my classes consist of editing and writing. These classes are public relations specific, and while they’re a lot of work I enjoy them immensely. In addition to my major classes, I have a theater minor in the School of Theater and Dance and I also study musical theater in the School of Music. I’m almost done with my minor, but this semester I have an acting class and a design class that help feed my theater bug. My musical theater studies consist of weekly voice lessons and musical theater classes twice a week. The musical theater class that I’m in culminates in a fall showcase. This semester I am assistant directing the showcase in addition to performing, so I am in charge of emails, scheduling, and a lot of blocking for the show. My involvement in these programs is rewarding but requires focus and effort. It’s important not to stretch yourself too thin in any one area so you can spend equal energy and time doing all the things you love.
After school, I have a job nannying. I met the woman I nanny for when she played my mom in a local production, sparking both a friendship and a job opportunity. I nanny five days a week after school. I also hold a position managing social media for USC Musical Theater. I recently coordinated and posted a TikTok that has gained over 1 million views and has received an overwhelming response from the online theater community. This has been a wonderful way to connect with my peers and express my creativity. I also work for a company in Atlanta (my hometown) called Musical Theater Workshop. MTW has played a large part in my development as a director and theater professional, and the people I work with are very special to me. I handle MTW’s social media, website creation, and assist with logistics when I can. All of these work opportunities are so special to me, and I’m so lucky to love what I do every day.
While the beginning of a new semester can be busy and stressful, it’s always important to remember to pour into the things that you love. Going back to school is always a big transition, but with the right balance of school, work, and social life, it can be both fun and productive.
