Review: RUINATION, Royal Ballet and Opera
by Franco Milazzo - Dec 8, 2024
In a season where theatres are filled with the usual hoary horde - here a Christmas Carol, there a Nutcracker or Messiah - the Royal Opera House deserves praise and maybe even a standing ovation for bringing back its Yuletide hit from 2022. Ben Duke’s Ruination (a co-production between the Royal Ballet and his Lost Dog company) is perfect for this time of year, being a work about reflecting on the recent past and built around the notions of love, family and children. Then again, those expecting something cheery may also want to consider that the source material is Euripides’s Medea, a Greek tragedy that makes Titus Andronicus look like an episode of Bluey.
Review: CINDERELLA, Royal Ballet and Opera
by Vikki Jane Vile - Dec 4, 2024
This year’s festive crowd pleaser from the Royal Ballet does not feature a growing Christmas tree nor a Kingdom of Sweets. Instead, an alternative is offered in the form of Frederick Ashton’s 1948 Cinderella, revived eighteen months ago after a lengthy absence and seen again now for the festive season.

Review: SLÄPSTICK: SCHËRZO, Wilton's Music Hall
by Michael Higgs - Oct 10, 2024
A brilliant comedy hit that fuses music, physical theatre, and that type of really-clever-yet-really-dumb humour that works for most audiences, it’s a show that keeps the audience laughing at every turn.

Review: SWAN LAKE IN-THE-ROUND, Royal Albert Hall
by Vikki Jane Vile - Jun 14, 2024
Derek Deane’s Swan Lake has quite the reputation. First premiered in 1997 it became known for its corps de ballet of 60 swans (with freelancers hired to beef up ENB’s ranks) and then in 2010, a BBC documentary tracked its rehearsals and opening night, not always depicting everyone in the most flattering light, but the spectacle of all those white tutus made it an audience favourite. Now it’s back to conclude the first season under new Artistic Director Aaron S. Watkin.

Previews: MRS. DOUBTFIRE Dazzles at Straz Center
by Deborah Bostock-Kelley - Apr 3, 2024
Directed by Jerry Zaks with music supervision, arrangements, and orchestration by Ethan Popp, we watched in awe as Daniel, an out-of-work man-child actor, magically transforms into the lovable Mrs. Doubtfire, a spry geriatric Scottish woman with some help from two friends. He does this to be hired by his ex-wife as a nanny after losing custody of his children in the divorce. And we have to give a round of applause for his real-life leading lady, Lakis, who dazzles as the believable, underappreciated, exasperated ex-wife.
