Enter a world of splendor and romance, of eye-popping excess, of glitz, grandeur, and glory! A world where Bohemians and aristocrats rub elbows and revel in electrifying enchantment. Pop the champagne and prepare for the spectacular (spectacular.)
After dazzling audiences since its Broadway debut in 2019, the party continues at Moulin Rouge!. Based on Baz Luhrmann’s beloved 2001 film, this Tony-winning show is a celebration of truth, beauty, freedom, and—above all—love.
What’s the show about? Set in the bohemian Paris of 1899, Moulin Rouge! follows the passionate and doomed romance between Christian, a young writer, and Satine, the star performer of the Moulin Rouge. With stakes raised by financial peril and a menacing duke’s demands, their love story unfolds against the backdrop of a glittering cabaret, where every moment pulses with energy, drama, and spectacle.
Featuring an eclectic jukebox score, Moulin Rouge! reinvents more than 70 pop hits into show-stopping medleys and heartfelt ballads, including “Lady Marmalade,” “Your Song,” and “El Tango de Roxanne.” Under the direction of Alex Timbers, the musical transforms the stage into a feast for the senses, filled with jaw-dropping choreography, opulent costumes, and dazzling set pieces.
Debuting on Broadway on July 25, 2019, the musical quickly became an audience favorite, earning 14 Tony nominations and winning 10, including Best Musical. Its original cast featured Aaron Tveit, Karen Olivo, and Danny Burstein, who also appear on the Grammy-winning cast album.
Productions have taken the world by storm, with critically acclaimed runs in London’s West End, Melbourne, and Tokyo. Touring productions across North America and Australia bring the spectacle to audiences far and wide, while plans for new stagings in Germany and South Korea show the show’s universal appeal.
Moulin Rouge! is more than a musical — it is a state of mind.
Not that the thumping, pumping Moulin Rouge allows you to dwell on its misogyny. This is musical as spectacle, so if you don't exactly feel the peril and passion of Christian and Satine's doomed romance, then no matter, because another visual bonbon will be thrown at you soon enough.
For all its splashy, glittery, high-kicking, butt-cheek-baring, sword-swallowing maximalism, Moulin Rouge! is something more unsettling than not good. It's not even very interesting. There's a shapelessness about it, a weird enervation underneath the flash and bang. It's directed by Alex Timbers, but it feels like it was assembled by committee, even by algorithm. The show veers broadly away from its beloved-by-millennials-everywhere source material, which in itself is no crime. But the path its creators have taken is one long trip through the Kingdom of Pandering, with multiple pit stops in the Meadows of Cutesiness and the Forest of Flat Characters. Everywhere it should be filthy, it's scrubbed aggressively clean, yet somehow it's still a hot mess.
