and choreographed by Michael Bennett, with book by James Kirkwood, and Nicholas Dante, music by Marvin Hamlisch and lyrics by Edward Kleban, the musical was born of workshop sessions with actual Broadway dancers (eight of whom appeared in the original cast) who laid bare their personal stories and the challenges they faced in pursuit of their dreams.
This ultimate tribute to the life of the Broadway dancer received twelve Tony Award nominations, winning nine-in addition to the 1976 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
