THE LION KING Celebrates Landmark Thanksgiving Week with New Box Office Record

Disney's landmark musical event, THE LION KING, has set a new box office record at Broadway's Minskoff Theatre by grossing $1,692,957 during the eight-performance Thanksgiving holiday week of November 23-29, 2009. The previous Minskoff record was held by THE LION KING, with a gross of $1,691,705 (set week ending 12/30/2007).

Disney's landmark musical event THE LION KING celebrated 5000 Broadway performances on Thursday, November 5 at the Minskoff Theatre. The touring production has played 56 cities across North America and has been seen by over 7 million theatergoers and grossed over $446 million to date.

Broadway's landmark musical THE LION KING has welcomed new cast members ALPHONSO ROMERO JONES II and Marquis Kofi Rodriguez ('Young Simba,) and SHEREEN PIMENTEL and SHANNON SKYE TAVAREZ ('Young Nala) to the company. Rodriguez and Pimentel made their Broadway debuts last night, September 29. Tavarez will make her Broadway debut tonight, September 30 and Jones will make his Broadway debut on tomorrow, October 1. Produced by Thomas Schumacher of Disney Theatrical Productions, THE LION KING officially opened on November 13, 1997 at the New Amsterdam Theatre. The production moved in its entirety, including all 52-cast members and the entire 24-member orchestra, from the New Amsterdam Theatre on June 4, 2006, and began performances nine days later at its current home, the Minskoff Theatre on June 13, 2006. The move followed the completion of custom renovations to accommodate the Tony Award-winning production.

'The Lion King' Delays Mandalay Bay Performances Until 5/5

Disney Theatrical Productions and Mandalay Bay have announced the award-winning Broadway phenomenon THE LION KING that is coming to the Mandalay Bay Theatre will delay the scheduled opening dates to 'provide additional time for the transformation of Mandalay Bay Theatre to accommodate the spectacular set' according to a press release. THE LION KING was originally planned to have preview performances begin on April 20th and an official opening on May 2nd, 2009. The new opening night is now set for May 15th, 2009 with preview performances beginning May 5th, 2009.
