Reboot Theatre hits it out of the ballpark, with a bold reboot of this All-American baseball musical! DAMN YANKEES runs September 6-21, 2024.
Reboot Theatre Company, known for its innovative and inclusive approach to classic works, is thrilled to present a groundbreaking reboot of DAMN YANKEES. This production, presented in association with Theatre Off Jackson, will challenge traditional gender roles and expectations, breathing new life into this iconic American musical. Performances will run from September 6-21, 2024, at Theatre Off Jackson.
DAMN YANKEES, originally a Broadway sensation and winner of seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical, tells the story of middle-aged baseball fanatic Joe Boyd, who sells his soul to the Devil (Mr. Applegate) for a chance to lead his beloved Washington Senators to victory against the New York Yankees. However, in this daring reimagining, Reboot Theatre Company subverts the classic narrative by exploring themes of gender fluidity and identity.
Director Brad Lo Walker (Village Theater KIDSTAGE, Taproot, PFP, 12th Night) teams up with music director Aimee Hong (Reboot’s SWEENEY, assoc. at 5th Ave SPRING AWAKENING) and choreographer Mackenzie Malhotra (Village Theatre KIDSTAGE, assoc. at Village’s CAMELOT) to create a production that challenges the audience to rethink notions of masculinity, femininity, and the constructs of gender in sports and beyond. The artistic team includes costume design by Chloe Cook, lighting design by Jacob Viramontes, properties design by Jack Bateman-Iino, and sound design by Kairon Bullock.
The DAMN YANKEES cast includes Annalisa Brinchman, Ellen Dessler Smith, Joanna Hardie, Sriram Kandori, Vincent Milay, Jessie Selleck, Sophie Sen, Lisa Stromme Warren, Ed Robinson, Stefanie Mei Fang Van Rafelghem, Natalie Silva, Salem Salma Wahab, Lexi Warden, Kiki Werner, and Eleanor Withrow.
"We are excited to take this beloved story and flip it on its head," says director Brad Lo Walker. "This production will explore the fluidity of identity, inviting audiences to see themselves in the characters regardless of their own gender. It’s a powerful reminder that the themes of ambition, love, and redemption are universal."
Based on the novel "The Year the Yankees Lost the Pennant" by Douglass Wallop, a sharp, witty score by Jerry Ross and Richard Adler, and a devilishly clever book by George Abbott and Douglass Wallop, DAMN YANKEES remains a timeless piece of musical theatre. This fresh interpretation promises to keep the spirit of the original while offering a new perspective on the characters' journeys.
DAMN YANKEES is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI). All authorized performance materials are also supplied by MTI. www.mtishows.com
