Old Trunk/ Escalator East to Edinburgh present: The Secret Wives of
Andy Williams at Edinburgh Fringe 2014. Like The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie - only in habits and on crack...
St. Agatha's Convent Orphanage 1969. A young woman arrives in need of spiritual solace but instead finds morbid orphans and snack-obsessed eccentric nuns with an almost inappropriate devotion to The
Andy Williams Show. Trusted with three hormonal orphans, Caitlin soon gets pulled into their odd little world, with only one thing threatening to pull her away again: love.
Quirky, honest, funny and engaging The Secret Wives of
Andy Williams is set in the decade when a new sort of freedom started to dawn slowly upon women. It explores themes of love for men, God, and in exploring all these male things, uncovers a more dependable source of comfort: sisterhood. Toying subtly and playfully with faith, forgiveness, and what it means to be a woman, the play tiptoes back through time from Old Trunk's 80s piece The Bastard Children of Remington Steele, again tackling big themes while keeping its signature darkness and fast paced comedy.
The play can be seen in conjunction with its 'sequel' sister show The Bastard Children of Remington Steele, set in the same Orphanage in the 1980s. The shows can be seen at the same time on alternate days in the Belly Dancer. The plays also work as stand-alone pieces.
Old Trunk is playwright, actor, character comedian, columnist, and radio presenter Sadie Hasler (Russell Howard's Good News, BBC's Walk On The Wild Side,
Rebecca Front's Little Cracker) and actor, dancer, improviser, and radio presenter Sarah Mayhew (The Weekly Show, Channel 4, Guerrilla Gig, BBC3, The Wright Stuff, Channel 5).
The Company has had an impressive first two years. They have twice been awarded
Arts Council funding, found patrons in
Jenny Eclair,
Phill Jupitus, and Deborah Frances-White, curated the first dedicated theatre tent for Metal's Village Green Festival, represented the Arts at the House of Commons, and appeared in The Sunday Times Magazine as a company 'making waves'.
The Secret Wives of
Andy Williams has been selected for Escalator East To Edinburgh. Each year Escalator, East to Edinburgh helps artists and arts organisations to raise their profile and perform to new audiences as part of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
