Curbside, a physical theatre company based in Long Beach, California is bringing Flight, an original physical theatre performance, to the largest arts festival in the world, the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
Curbside is led by Ezra LeBank, an internationally acclaimed professor of movement at California State University Long Beach, and author of the newly released book CLOWNS (Routledge, UK). Curbside is known for playing with mixed forms of movement and language to frisk unusual theatrical terrain.
Curbside isn't new to the hustle and bustle of performing on the world's largest stage. In 2010, they brought Extinguish to fringe, where it was called "The Next Big Thing!" by popular Scottish arts magazine The List. Now the company returns to Edinburgh with Flight, written by Ezra LeBank and Directed by Olivia Treviño.
Flight springs to life through storytelling, physical theatre, and acrobatics to create a whimsical world inspired by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's classic children's story The Little Prince. Our favorite pilot crashes on the Mexican coast while he's searching for his lost friend, The Little Prince. Memories of twinkling stars transform into sand dunes, crashing waves, and far off islands as he remembers that what is most important can only be seen with the heart.
Using physical invention we harness the capacity of the human body to bring our story to life. We invite audiences of all ages (4+) to remember and discover the magical world of our imaginations.
Getting to Fringe hasn't been easy. Curbside has developed the show over more than two years, and the company has been rehearsing since March, utilizing grants, individual contributions, and crowd funding to raise over $16,000. They will premiere the show in Scotland on August 6th, and will perform Flight in Long Beach in the fall.
