EDINBURGH 2019: Review: SPONTANEOUS POTTER, Gilded Balloon, Rose Theatre Image

Spontaneous Potter is an improvised comedy show based on fan fiction titles, suggested by the audience nightly. Our night is called Potter and the Legendary Brexit Monster.

The cast wear gowns representing the four Hogwarts houses and each have wands. They're confronted with a typically uncharitable Snape deducting vast numbers of points from Gryffindor for not paying attention to a complex potion for vehicular ink on paper, including ingredients of pixie wings, boomslang and muggle ink cartridges. Ron is forced into a flashback where he struggles to break up with Lavender Brown and Dobby also makes an appearance. Harry extends an Olive Branch to Malfoy, who remains smug and unhelpful.

The cast, in swapping roles so frequently, create a playful and energetic mood, with 'no room for toxic masculinity' beneath the cloak of invisibility. Dumbledore sends Fawkes out to scout Hogwarts, knowing he'll be safe, sending the school into operation lockdown and creating an impenetrable dome.

They question whether the beast is in fact a Bricksit monster and a hilarious exchange between Neville, a love potion and his lovable rock ensues. McGonagall clarifies the state of play, as Crabbe and Goyle's missing fathers are also on the loose outside the castle, having been on a dangerous Death Eater mission.

Thankfully, none of this is a spoiler because the show is different every night, which must be thrilling for the actors.

Spontaneous Potter is a playful, inventive piece, joyfully tapping into a generation of Potterheads' love of the franchise.
