EDINBURGH 2018: BWW Q&A- Where Does The Love Go? Image

BWW catches up with Zach Zucker, Viggo Venn and Jonny Woolley about bringing Where Does The Love Go to the 2018 Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

Tell us a bit about Where Does The Love Go.

This year we're teaming up with LA-based, funk-punk band Thumpasaurus and adapting their 25 minute funk opera into an hour-long stage show. This show is essentially a sci-fi melodrama performed by a bunch of clowns and world-class musicians that takes place in a post-space war, futuristic world where Jeff Bezos and the Amazon Empire control the world. It is very serious art, as it is a critique of capitalism and the pursuit of convenience.

What is the format of the show?

We originally set out to make a silent clown opera, but it's evolved into a sci-fi musical with digital elements, choreographed dance sequences, and lots of great tunes. Zach, Viggo and Jonny (director of Zach & Viggo) will be playing all the characters while Thump scores the entire show and acts as a sort of Greek chorus. We've also left space for the musicians to do their thing because you know, they're a funk band.

How did the collaboration with Thumpasaurus come about?

Thump's lead singer Lucas Tamaren wrote the opera last year but we only started working on it a few months ago. We actually met them all back in LA in 2016 when Zach and Lucas dated two girls that were best friends. Both of them got their hearts broken (young love) and vowed to make beautiful art together in order to fill the massive hole in our hearts. This show is the result of that.

What does the music bring to it?

The music is everything. These guys are all exceptionally gifted jazz/blues musicians independently, but together they have a really special mix of classical training and punk-rock energy. The music is the foundation of the show, but we've constructed a really fun and dumb narrative to accompany it.

What do you hope audiences take away from the show?

Everyone is perfect.

Zach & Viggo + Thumpasaurus: Where Does The Love Go? is at the Underbelly Cowgate - Belly Button from August 2nd - 26th
