BWW catches up with Kate Berlant to chat about bringing Communikate to the 2018 Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
Tell us a bit about Communikate.
'Communikate' is my heavily improvised comedy show where I do stand-up mixed in with live psychic readings of my audience. It's very fun and it changes lives - not my words, just ask past audience members!
This is your Fringe debut- do you think you know what to expect from the festival?
I'm thrilled that I get to come and experience Fringe. I have friends who have done it and they all encouraged me to do the same. It is clearly very rigorous but also very fun and important to experience - like a scalding bath! Painful, but key to overall health. I'm scared!!!!!!!!! I'm excited !!!!!!!!
Where might we have seen you before?
You may have seen me on my episode of Netflix's 'The Characters' which I wrote and starred in. Or in '555', my Vimeo mini-series I created with my frequent collaborator John Early. Or if you watch TV you may have seen me on HBO's High Maintenance, or on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. Or, most recently, the major motion picture 'Sorry to Bother You'.
Who would you recommend comes to see Communikate?
I would recommend people come to 'Communikate' who are open to something different and who don't inherently hate women. Be honest with yourself! The show is ephemeral; each one is different and heavily influenced by the energy of the audience. For that reason, I ask that my viewers refrain from eating wheat or refined sugar 72 hours before coming to the show.
Are there any other shows you're hoping to catch in Edinburgh?
I'm excited to see Jacqueline Novak and Natalie Palimides!
