There have been numerous articles over the years featuring the bug bears of theatregoers, but certain annoyances intensify at the Fringe.

Be On Time.

If performers run over their allocated time, they get fined so the shows really have to run to time. Have realistic expectations for your ability to dash between venues. Most venues won't allow latecomers but with the ones that do its incredibly distracting for the performers and other audience members to have you crashing in after they've already started.

Just. Sit. Down.

I continue to be amazed at the inability of adults to arrange themselves in unreserved seating. Nobody is going to think you fancy them if you sit next to them and leaving seat gaps for busy/sold out shows is just an inconvenience for everybody.

Turn Your Phone Off.

Off. Not silent and sneakily checking it in your bag while lighting up half the row. Off.

Leaving Early.

It's hard to be discreet in such small venues. If you're really not enjoying something- try to stick it out. If you must go, do it quietly.

Hot food.

It's easy to pack your schedule and forget about meal times. This occasionally means snacking during shows is necessary but taking a fish supper into a small performance space is absolutely unacceptable.

Be Nice To Venue Staff.

It's the Fringe. Everybody is tired. Don't take it out on the people who are just trying to get you to queue in a civilised fashion.

Don't Talk Badly About Performers Until You're Clear of the Venue.

Due to the quick turnaround of Fringe shows, it's highly likely that you will find yourself ranting about that hour of your life that you won't get back- and find the performer directly behind you.
