Tell us a bit about Get Ugly.
Get Ugly is a musical comedy is about finding confidence in yourself again after your heart's been broken into lots of tiny little pieces. It's about the wonderful, colourful adventures and mortifications of newly independent life: weird Tinder dates, freaking out about STDs, trying to 're-invent' yourself.. dodging hipsters, envying gym girls and desperately trying to keep body hair under control.
What was the inspiration behind the show?
My material is inspired by real life. I like to transform all the most awful, weird and wonderful experiences into comedy songs, that people can relate to (and maybe even sing along to). I started writing Get Ugly in the early months post-break up, and have been so busy working on it that I can't remember how I used to have time to have a boyfriend.
Having had a five star sell out run in 2016, are you feeling any pressure?
Never! I'm so ready to share this show (which I love) with my favourite audiences in the world (Edinburgh fringe-goers are JUST the best). And stress is no way to approach the fringe... you must learn to smile and sigh. Left the house with no umbrella and walked into an unexpected cyclone? Venue is thirty minutes further than you thought and you already have a sweaty back? Your venue door is actually a Venetian blind? Sigh and smile, and you will survive! I can't wait. It's going to be a puddly blast.
What have you been up to since last year's festival?
I co-wrote and performed a comedy play about female friendship, Split; co-wrote a musical Club Mexicano (which is due to tour in the Autumn); gigged at lots of comedy nights across the country; performed with my improv team My Brother, Jose, and made a music video for my Hipster song. A highlight of the year was when I toured Get Ugly to Perth Festival (Australia) in February, and it was nominated for Best Comedy.
Who would you recommend comes to see Get Ugly?
Anyone and everyone who enjoys honest, fun and vibrant musical comedy, who loves hearing stories about single life and the search for self-confidence. If you like shows with energy, audience interaction and heart, then come and see this show. If you've ever cried on a bus, been overly-disappointed about the number of likes an Instagram post has received, sat in a trendy cafe feeling as out of place as a pear in a Mojito, loved anyone, lost anyone, forgotten how great you are for even a moment... come and see this show. If none of these apply to you but you just feel like doing something fun... come and see this show! Would love to have you there!
