Tell us a bit about Rosalind
I think many people at some point in their life have felt held back or restricted and maybe as a result not been able to express themselves as they want to. Shakespeare created the character of Rosalind, a bold courageous woman living in a society that represses, her 400 years ago but she still feels massively relevant today. The show presents Rosalind as both man and woman as asks the audience to question their perception and stereotypes of gender.
Why bring it to Edinburgh?
Edinburgh is renowned for its incredible comedy and theatre but dance is still relatively underrepresented. I think it's really important to build the number of great dance shows at the fringe and introduce audiences in an exciting way to an art form that really isn't as alien as many might think! What sets it apart from other shows at the Fringe?
Rosalind features an incredible international cast who come from a huge range of dance backgrounds including breakdance, Korean traditional dance and line, as well as contemporary. Rosalind is probably one of the most physical dance shows at the festival and is guaranteed to amaze audiences with the dancers' relentless physicality. It also features poetry from the acclaimed Sabrina Mahfouz and a huge neon structure.
Who would you recommend comes to see you?
Shakespeare lovers and anyone with an interest in theatre or art. I'd also love for people who have never seen dance before to come. Dance is such an accessible art form despite what people may think, just come with an open mind and don't feel you have to try to understand everything, it's about the experience!
Are there any other shows you're hoping to catch at the festival?
I'm really looking forward to seeing Gecko's new production 'The Dreamer' which was created in Shanghai and, like Rosalind, was created as part of British Council's Shakespeare Lives programme. I also can't wait to see our collaborator Sabrina Mahfouz perform as part of That's What She Said at Bar Bados Complex and see her show Offside at Pleasance Courtyard.
Timings and ticket information for Rosalind are available on the edfringe website.
