Tell us a bit about Indie as F**k.
Indie as F**k is a piece of gig-theatre, meaning that it is equal parts play and equal parts live music. It is a slight coming of age story that follows what many teenagers experience as they leave school and begin to venture into the big, bad world - the realisation that not all dreams come true. Indie as F**k is based on a true story of a real band that I was a part of during my formative years and although we knew we were never gonna 'make it', the time I spent in that band was very important and very fun.
Why bring it to Edinburgh?
We are a company based between Edinburgh and West Lothian, we have been lucky enough to have the biggest arts festival in the world on our doorstep. We would be stupid not to take advantage of this. The Fringe is so important and exciting for young companies like ours as it allows us to try out new work and network with those companies that are already more established. Indie as F**k was our debut show as a company back in 2015, so we are bringing it back to the fringe after developing the show further and are very excited to present it.
What sets it apart from other shows at the Fringe?
The show is performed by a live five piece 'indie' band with actors also becoming musicians. We are trying to create a gig-like atmosphere completed with wristbands and hand-stamps, we are packing a small space with big music. Gig-theatre has been growing rapidly in the last few years and it's very exciting. This genre is bringing new people into theatre, that maybe wouldn't have gone before but would go to gigs. We knew from the outset that music had to have equal weight with the script and from this we have created a very lively and exciting performance.
Who would you recommend comes to see you?
We hope we have created a show that can be enjoyed by anyone who has been or is still a teenager and have lived through all the embarrassing experiences that comes with this. As you can guess from the title Indie As F**k isn't for children or those under about 14 but apart from that we believe everyone will enjoy our show in one way or another. We particularly want to draw in people who would maybe not choose to see a play but have a keen interest in music and gigs, we really think they'll enjoy both the music and the story.
Are there any other shows you're hoping to catch at the festival?
I really want to try and catch Buzz: The Musical from Fat Rascal Theatre Company, I kept trying to catch it last year but it sold out, so I'm definitely gonna try to fit that one in. I'm also looking forward to National Theatre of Scotland's How to Act which I think looks so interesting and very exciting.
